Are You Game?!!!
Those of us who competed in Okinawa during the World Karate Kobudo Tournaments in the past know how much fun they were. Sadly however, it has been since 2009 that Okinawa hosted the last one and there are currently no talks of a set date for another. Yet, for athletes looking for a sport Karate challenge in Okinawa, there is good news. This year, on October 18 (tentative), with the help of O-sensei Meitetsu Yagi, the All Okinawa Karate-do Association has made its registration to overseas competitors accessible. This tournament has a grass roots history that is different than the World Tournaments of the past. This event is not run by the government but instead by Okinawa’s oldest multi-style association. This prestigious event is open to all ages and belts. Rules are quite similar to AAU Karate and will be posted on this website in the months to come. Divisions and costs have already been posted on our blog.
Who Can Participate?
The All Okinawa Karate-Do Association is a closed group and typically to participate in this event requires a membership. This year however, Houkonkai has volunteered to communicate and help any overseas competitor of Okinawa Goju Ryu, Uechi Ryu, Shorin Ryu, and Shorinji Ryu from all over the world. Participants must have a relationship with dojos in Okinawa who are a part of All Okinawa Karate-do Association. This Kata and Kumite showdown has been an annual event for about 20 years. It is the first time in recent history that its winners will now have an International title.
If you already have a relationship with a dojo that is a part of the All Okinawa Karate-do Association and would like to be a part of this event, you are encouraged to contact your Sensei in Okinawa. If you currently practice Goju-Ryu and have no relationship with Okinawa, Houkonkai can help you. Click here to contact us for membership.
The championships coincides with the end of our week long training camp with Master Yagi Meitetsu and Ippei Sensei. Our 5 day training camp starts on October 12. The camp is an intensive training in both pre-WII Okinawa Goju Ryu and winning strategies for the championships on the 18th. There will be about 5 hours of daily training on average. Training takes part in the dojo, on the beach, and in the famous Matsuyama Koen. The itinerary and instructor list are currently being finalized and details will be posted here soon as well.
The above poster and banner was created by Houkonkai to help share the information while we wait for official word. The deadline for physical registrations to be in Okinawa is in August 2015. Therefore the deadline for Houkonkai to receive registration will be July 31st.
Please visit Houkonkai regularly since details of the tournament process will be posted here weekly.
